We deliver PSHE using a curriculum developed by the PSHE association, of which our Federation are members. Our thematic approach to primary PSHE education, covers all three core themes of the Programme of Study (Health and Wellbeing; Relationships; and Living in the Wider World) over the school year, with three topics per half term. This approach allows different year groups to work on similar themes at the same time, building a spiral programme year on year, whilst offering flexibility in terms of medium term planning.

Aims

The overarching aim for PSHE education is to provide pupils with:

accurate and relevant knowledge
opportunities to turn that knowledge into personal understanding
opportunities to explore, clarify and if necessary challenge, their own and others’ values, attitudes, beliefs, rights and responsibilities
the skills, language and strategies they need in order to live healthy, safe, fulfilling, responsible and balanced lives.

A curriculum that is ambitious for all pupils.

As a federation of inclusive Christian schools, we value and respect all and endeavour to embrace and celebrate our diverse community. The Department for Education (DfE) has stated in section 2.5 of the National Curriculum Framework that ‘all schools should make provision for personal, social, health and economic education (PSHE), drawing on good practice’. We aim to fulfil our statutory responsibility to support pupils’ spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development and prepare them for the experiences, opportunities, and responsibilities in life.

A curriculum that is coherently planned and sequenced.

We have designed our curriculum to meet the specific needs of our school, children and community. We deliver PSHE using a curriculum developed by the PSHE association, of which our Federation are members. The model we have adopted takes a thematic approach to primary PSHE education, covering all three core themes of the Programme of Study (Health and Wellbeing; Relationships; and Living in the Wider World) over the school year, with three topics per half term. This approach allows different year groups to work on similar themes at the same time, building a spiral programme year on year.

A curriculum that is successfully adapted, designed and developed for pupils and those with special educational needs and/or disabilities.

We are committed to offering a fully inclusive and nurturing PSHE education for our pupils, ensuring that children of all levels and abilities are supported and challenged to achieve and feel successful and proud. The planning framework we use is adapted from the PSHE association. It sets out learning outcomes for pupils with SEND and is designed to support teachers in our Federation, plan and assess developmentally-appropriate PSHE education for pupils with SEND.

A curriculum that is broad and balanced.

Our PSHE education incorporates health education, relationships education and economic wellbeing and careers.
Our curriculum for PSHE aims to ensure that all pupils:

are taught using best practice principles. Themes are revisited year on year, building on and extending prior learning.
develop the skills, language and strategies they need in order to live healthy, safe, fulfilling, responsible and balanced lives.
are equipped with a sound understanding of risk and with the knowledge and skills necessary to make safe and informed decisions.
have opportunities to explore, clarify and if necessary challenge, their own and others’ values, attitudes, beliefs, rights and responsibilities.
